I love old pine, its the most beautiful of all woods to me. I once built a log home, and used nothing but old pine throughout the whole house, reclaimed from an old sharecroppers house that was being demolished and a factory that was getting torn down. Some of the wood had musket balls imbedded into it.

Hello David
Thanks for commenting on this important issue. I have moderated the post into saying chain-supermarkets. What I think, however, is meant by this term, food desert (without knowing a lot about the work of National Center for Public Research)is that even with the grocery stores that exist, a healthy food alternative is still not affordable enough for many people, and that is why urban farming is a great and sustainable initiative in order to obtain "Food Justice" as Shane from Earthworks called it.. I think this is a problem that doesn't only apply to Detroit, but is the case in many cities - Toronto as well - where processed fast food is much cheaper than vegetables in the average supermarket. In deed an important discussion to take when talking about community development.

You are right, Detroiters are tired of the negative portrayal of this city. As someone who has lived here for the past 11 years, it is a city of incredible frustration and incredible hope. There are incredible assets in this city and it is heartening to see that the rest of the world is finally willing to give those who work so hard to improve life in the city their due.

One thing I will dispute, there are plenty of full service grocery stores in the city. A trade association of independent grocers recently reported at ARISE! Detroit's Neighborhoods Day press conference that 84 grocery stores do exist within the city limits. They include Metro Foodland in the Rosedale Park neighborhood, King Cole Foods in the North End neighborhood and Honeybee Market in Mexicantown.

A more accurate statement about the alleged food desert in Detroit would be that there are currently no chain grocery stores.

The first one doesn't allow for mixte/step-through frames, frames with water bottle holders, or frames with cables run along the top tube (which is pretty much most of the bikes in use...). The second one is a non-starter for reasons already described in the article. The third one just looks tedious to operate; I wouldn't put my bike in it.

Frankly, I find these ideas poorly thought-out. They belie a tenuous grasp of bicycle design, and seeing them featured in a design blog concerns me.
